Story from Providence

The day Providence House opened, we were sent to a village to pick up four children from one family. We went to the shack they lived in, but they were no where to be found. We walked up and down the streets asking if anyone had seen the family.

Finally we found them — hiding from us! The parents had found out that the $180 they get from the government would stop if they didn’t have the children in the house. They didn’t care that all they had to feed their kids were bits of stale bread and sugar, or that the six of them were living in one tiny, filthy room, sleeping in the same bed!

The children ranged in age from five to fourteen, and all of them were so skinny and malnourished. I was so scared that we might be forced to leave them in those conditions!

God was good and we were able to finally convince them to let us take the children. Once in the van, the stories they told started to pour out. Their parents were drunk all the time. Their mother never prepared any food for them; a neighbor had given them the bread.

They were so excited to see their rooms, a bed of their own, and a good warm meal. When we took them to pick out some clothes one of them asked with wide eyes, “can we really keep the clothes you give us?”

Thank you for your help in giving these children a home.
